Exploring the canals

Doris and her family – including the dog, Peter, – regularly went on barge holidays, travelling across country up to Birmingham and the surrounding areas.

Showing her photograph of one time, Doris says:

“We couldn’t go every year, couldn’t afford to, but we went about 4 times, on different canals. It was hard work doing the locks and the children used to help – until they got fed up with it, when the novelty wore off!

“One of the little ones fell in once – we had to rake him out, luckily it wasn’t very deep! My grandson is missing from the photo, he didn’t come out that day as he was feeling unwell.

“But we did enjoy those times. A barge holiday is very relaxing,and we loved that you could pull up anywhere and tie up, and nip into a pub!”.
